One-to-one Writing Tutorials
The WRC offers individual writing instruction to students from first-year to graduate in any discipline. Students can make an appointments for a 50-minute session by phone, in person, or
online. Consultants work with students at any stage of the writing process including planning, drafting, focusing, organizing, revising, acknowledging sources, and learning to proofread and edit.

Student Referral Program
This program is designed for students who have difficulty producing writing that meets academic standards. Faculty can place students on referral to receive tutoring each week from the same tutor, for as long as necessary during the semester. The
Student Referral Form is available online.

Classroom Presentations & Workshops

Consultants provide brief classroom introductions to students about the services of the WRC. Faculty may also request 50-minute workshops on the following subjects: MLA-Style Documentation, APA-Style Documentation, and Revision Strategies. To request a workshop, use the WRC Classroom Presentation & Workshop Request Form.  (Please give us at least one week's notice to schedule a classroom presentation or workshop.)

Peer Response Group Workshops
Faculty may also request consultants join them in the classroom to organize and assist with peer response group workshops. Use the
Workshop Request Form for this service. (Please give us at least one week's notice to schedule a peer response group workshop.)

Effective Writing Instruction - What Works?

Faculty across the disciplines need proven strategies for teaching writing, practices grounded in research on the teaching and learning of writing:

Print Library
The Writing Resources Center houses two libraries:

  • The Janet L. Smith Collection consists of professional journals and books on writing instruction and research. Materials are available to Teacher-Consultants of the UNC Charlotte Writing Project and to UNC Charlotte faculty, staff, and students.

  • The WRC Library has books specific to student writing concerns, such as resumes, writing in the disciplines, writing about literature, technical writing, and grammar. Students may use these books within the center during operational hours.
