Frequently Asked Questions

Who can use the Writing Resources Center?
UNC Charlotte students from first-year to graduate, faculty, and staff can receive writing assistance in the WRC.

What writing can the WRC assist with?
You may visit the center for help on writing for any course, in any discipline. The WRC also offers assistance with resumes, cover letters, and scholarship applications.

Do I need an appointment to visit the WRC?
For guaranteed availability, make an appointment ahead of time, because the services in the writing center are heavily used.
Click here for instructions. It is possible to get a walk-in appointment, but there is no guarantee one will be available when you need it. Walk-in appointments result when students forfeit appointments by being more than 10 minutes late for a meeting with a tutor.

How long do writing tutorial sessions last?
Writing tutorials generally last 50 minutes; however, sessions may be shorter, depending on your needs.

Will my professor be told I saw a WRC consultant?
Writing assistants fill out a report after each tutorial. If you would like to share a report of your consultation with your instructor, ask the tutor to print or e-mail a copy to you.

How often can I make an appointment with a consultant?
You are allowed two appointments per week. To ensure that we serve all students fairly, you are allowed only one appointment per day.

What happens if I don't show up for my scheduled appointment?
To ensure you get the help you need, when you need it, please cancel an appointment with as much notice as possible. After two no-shows, you are not eligible to make appointments for the rest of the semester. Then you must rely only on walk-in opportunities.

Who are the consultants in the WRC?
Most writing assistants are students, learning to tutor writing. They receive extensive and ongoing training, including a semester-long course, English 4400/5400: Theory & Practice of Tutoring Writing. Some writing assistants are English Department Graduate Teaching Assistants. Others are graduate and undergraduate tutors from across the disciplines.

Will tutors in the WRC fix my paper for me?
Writing center consultants will not simply correct your errors. They will teach you to understand the strengths and weaknesses of your writing. They will help you find answers and learn to research, write, revise, and proofread and edit on your own. Their goal is to help you become a better writer, not just to improve the quality of a specific paper.
